Joyce: Hello, thank you for calling Web International English. This is Joyce speaking, how may I help you?

Caller: Hello, I would like to speak to your education supervisor, Mr. Wang, please.

Joyce: Just a moment, I’ll check to see if he’s at her desk. May I tell him who is calling?

Caller: This is William Burton from Shanghaidaily, I’m calling in regards to our meeting next Monday.

Joyce: Thank you, Mr. Burton. Can you please hold for a moment? I’ll check to see if she is available.

Caller: No problem.

Joyce: I’m sorry, Mr. Wang is away from his desk. He’s already left for a meeting. Would you like to leave a message for him?

Caller: No, thanks. I’ll call him later.

Joyce: Ok, bye!

 

This is….. : 在电话里，说“我是……”不可以直接说“I am”，而是用“This is…..”

I would like to speak to: 字面意思是“我想和…说话”，也就是“我想找…”的意思。

I’ll check to see: 意思是“我看看…..”

Which one of these is the "Odd-Man-Out"? Which one of these is different from the other three? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone, on your own, without anyone else. You can listen to the radio alone. You can read a book alone. You can write a letter alone. But you can't really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be 'dangerous' because men in white coats may come and take you away!!!

其中哪个是那个“不合群的家伙”呢？哪个与众不同呢？答案是“说”。其他的三个你都可以自己做，单独做，不需要任何其他人帮助。你可以自己听收音机，自己读书，自己写封信，可是你不能自言自语吧！自言自语可是很“危险”的，随时可能有穿白大褂的人来把你带走！！！

 

That is why you should make every effort possible to find somebody to speak with. Where can you find people who can speak English with you? And how can you practise speaking when you are alone?

这就是为什么你一定要尽最大努力去找别人和你一起说。哪里可以找到这些陪你说英语的人呢？当没人陪你的时候，你又该怎么练习说呢？
