 English, you have to say!

Dialogue
Lily: When you are in a restaurant and you want the waiter to bring the bill, what do you do to attract his attention?
Angela: I just make eye contact with him and nod my head or wave hand. Then I tell him when he comes over to the table. Why do you ask?
Lily: I went out with my boyfriend to a nice restaurant last night and I noticed that many people shouted for the bill.
Angela: That seems a little impolite in such a restaurant.
Lily: That’s what I thought. I just thought I’d ask you and see what you thought of it. Anyway, how are your wedding plans going?
Angela: Very well. We started organizing everything early to avoid a last minute rush to get things done. The only thing that isn’t ready yet is his wedding dress.
Lily: When will that be ready?
Angela: They said that it would be ready in two weeks.

Notes:
bring the bill:在此,让waiter 来bring the bill,可以理解为“买单”。
come over:过来
in two weeks:in +时间段,表示的是“多长时间之后”。

Speaking to Yourself can be Dangerous! (3)

Shopping
If you are living in an English-speaking country, you have a wonderful opportunity. Practise speaking to the local people such as shop assistants or taxi drivers. Even if you don't want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. "How much does this cost?" "Can I pay by cheque?" "Which do you recommend?" Often you can start a real conversation - and it costs you nothing!

Pubs and Bars
Even if you don't live in an English-speaking country, there are often American, British, Irish and Australian pubs in many large cities. If you can find one of these pubs, you'll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.

Live and Learn
Sorry. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’m really sorry.

English people say sorry a lot, even when things are not their fault! If you make the smallest mistake (with someone’s name or nationality for example ), it is often a good idea to say sorry or I’m sorry.
For bigger mistakes, say I’m so sorry or I’m really sorry.
The usual replies to sorry are: That’s OK. That’s alright. Don’t worry about it.

I’m really sorry.
That’s ok. That’s alright. Don’t worry about it.
