                                           关于Hi-English电子杂志的说明

    Dear all,

Best regards,

Rachel

 English, you have to say!

Grace要去参加朋友婚礼,在和同事讨论挑什么样的礼服合适。
看以下对话:

Dialogue:
Grace: Can you help me pick out some fabric for a dress? I’m going to get one made for a friend’s wedding.
Joyce: Sure. What kind of material do you want the dress to be made from?
Grace: It depends on the price, but I was thinking of getting a wool/cashmere blend.
Joyce: That will probably be quite expensive, but the more you pay for the fabric, the longer it’ll last and the better it’ll look. What color do you want the dress to be?
Grace: I was thinking of a brown pin-striped suit.
Joyce: Brown, huh? Isn’t that a bit dull?
Grace: Haven’t you heard? Brown is the new black.
Joyce: Why don’t you just get black? Black dresses are always fashionable and can be worn for anything- a funeral, a wedding, a job interview- anything!
Grace: That may be true, but black is so boring. Anyway, I already have three black suits. I might as well get a dress that stands out from the rest.
Joyce: Here are two different shades of brown. Which one do you prefer?
Grace: I like the one on the left, but I don’t like the pattern on it. It’s too much. I want a pattern that’s a bit subtler.
Joyce: How about this one?
Grace: I think that will go. Let’s go talk to the tailor about getting it made.
Joyce: OK, let’s go!

Notes:
fabric for a suit:做套装的布料
pin-striped:细条纹的
fashionable:流行,时髦
stands out:突出

Value

A well known speaker started off his seminar(讲座,研讨会) by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200(在一个有200人的房间里), he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"
Hands started going up.
He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded (开始)to crumple(弄皱) the dollar bill up.
He then asked, "Who still wants it?"
Still the hands were up in the air(手依然举在空中).
"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground(把它扔在地上) and started to grind (碾压)it into the floor with his shoe.
He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty(脏兮兮皱巴巴). "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.
"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable(有价值的) lesson. No matter(不管)  what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value(贬值). It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground(grind的过去分词形式) into the dirt(泥土,灰尘)by the decisions we make and the circumstances(周围环境) that come our way.
We feel as though(仿佛,好像) we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special - Don't ever forget it!
