办公室里同事各个很忙，想约个时间谈点事情似乎特别难哦！
来看下面的对话。
 
Dialogue：
 
(Set up a meeting - on the phone)
Lily: Hi, Johnny, it’s Lily. Are you free to meet this morning?
Johnny: This morning? Let me see… Nope. I’m busy this morning. How about lunchtime?
Lily: No. I have a luncheon today.
Johnny: Oh, too bad! Maybe another time.
Lily: No, wait! What about this afternoon?
Johnny: This afternoon? Is three o’clock OK?
Lily: Yes, that works for me.
Johnny: Oh, sorry. It doesn’t work for me. I just noticed I have something scheduled.
Lily: Then how about tomorrow? We could have a breakfast meeting – my treat.
Johnny: No can do. I’m taking the day off tomorrow.
Lily: I only need five minutes. Couldn’t you squeeze me in sometime today?
Johnny: Well, if I have a moment, I’ll call you.
Lily: Thanks.
 
Notes:
Lunchtime午餐时间
luncheon：午餐约会
my treat：我请客
No can do：相当于 No way！意思是“不行，不可能”
take the day off：请假
squeeze：挤出时间

English Kaleidoscope

ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE WHO SERVE
 
In the days when an ice cream sundae（冰激凌圣代） cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table（在桌旁）. A waitress（女服务员） put a glass of water in front of（在…面前） him.
"How much is an ice cream sundae?"
"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied（研究） the number of coins in it.
"How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired（询问）.
Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient（不耐烦）.
"Thirty-five cents," she said brusquely（冷淡地，唐突地）.
The little boy again counted the coins.
"I'll have the plain ice cream（纯冰激凌）," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed（付款并离开了）.
When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard（困难地咽下了口水） at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies - her tip（小费）

Live and Learn
 
When you telephone in Britain, the operator might ask Are you through? meaning “Are you connected to the other speaker?” This question can be very confusing to Americans, because in American English it usually means ”Have you finished?”
 
若你在英国打电话，话务员也许会问你：Are you through？意思是“接通了吗？”这在美国听来就很不可理喻，因为在美式英语中，这句话的意思是“你打完了吗？”
