Situation 情景：Cathy hesitated to tell the officer Eric that she was tired of the job and wanted to work in another department. She called her friend Emily to ask for some advice.
凯茜对目前的工作已经厌倦，想去其它部门工作，但是否要将这个想法告诉他的上司艾瑞克她还拿不定主意。于是她打电话给朋友艾米莉征求意见。
Emily: Hello, this is Emily speaking.

Emily: Cathy, how's everything going?

Cathy: Not so good. I want to talk with you about my job.

In the Warring States period（战国时期） of China (475-221 B.C.), there was a state called Qi（齐国）, the king of which was very fond of（喜欢） listening to the music played on the Yu（竽）, a wind instrument（管乐器）. So he convened（召集） a band of more than 300 players from his state. Everyday the band was called in（召来） to play the Yu for his Majesty at teatime. And the king seemed to be very satisfied with the band and the harmonies（合奏） performed. As a matter of fact, one of the players, Nan Guo, knew nothing about（对…一窍不通） the instrument. But he did manage to pass himself off（冒充） and went on well with his tricks that each time he tried to seat himself behind and pretended to（假装） be playing the Yu together with the others. And everything seemed good for him. He had never been exposed（暴露）. Finally, his days were gone when the prince ascended the throne（登上皇位）. As the latter would enjoy solo（独奏） rather than harmony, the players were called each in to play alone before the king. This time, as we have guessed, Nan Guo was embarrassed to find there was no place for him any more. The story describes the case in which the spurious is mixed with the genuine（良莠不齐）. |

The particle off can sometimes add the meaning of “moving away” or “leaving”. It has this meaning in drive off and walk off. This may help you with the meaning of other phrasal verbs with off.
